Škocjan to Ilirska Bistrica
This route is varied and runs on paved and gravel roads, as well as along dirt roads and a few kilometers on single trails. The journey begins with a gradual climb and ends with a descent towards Ilirska Bistrica with many shorter ups and downs in between. The highest point of the day is just before reaching the village of Pregarje.
Škocjan near Divača is one of three villages in the heart of the Škocjan Caves Regional Park and is the starting point for a number of routes. Štefanija lookout here offers sweeping views of the karst landscape and the Reka River. Škocjan Caves are a unique system of water caves that has been added to the UNESCO heritage list. Their most characteristic karst feature are pans. You can also visit the Škocjan Interpretation Center and Polygon, which focuses on contact karst.
The cycling on the first day is filled with green fans, blind valleys, and charming karst villages offering refreshment. Dimnica Cave is located near the village of Slivje and is open to visitors.
