The Škocjan Caves Park has opened an interpretation center and interpretation polygon presenting contact karst as one of the typical karst types in the target destination. The interpretation center features an updated geological collection; it is also the starting point for exploring contact karst and ensures visitors are sustainably channeled to nearby hinterland hot spots along predetermined routes. Škocjan Caves are a unique natural phenomenon. They are the work of the Reka River that springs in the foothills of Mount Snežnik, flows above ground for 55 km and after reaching the limestone-covered area of the karst, sinks underground, which is a textbook example of contact karst on the global scale. The building of the interpretation center in Škocjan is the former Delez Homestead, near the Škocjan Caves Park information center. A visit to the ground floor and cellar rooms provides visitors with information about three important topics in this protected area: archaeology, biology, and geology i.e. karstology. The old geological collection on the ground floor of the building was updated in the KRASn'KRŠ project. The contents and interpretation have been revised and the room now presents contact karst, one of the four types of karst in the Krasn'Krš target destination. Are you wondering what contact karst even is? Are you interested how limestone is formed and how it creates a karst surface, how Škocjan Caves were carved out, and what role the Reka River plays in all of this? Learn about this and much more by visiting the Škocjan interpretation center. You can explore the rooms with all three collections by yourself or ask our experienced guides if you have any additional questions or would like specific explanations and they will gladly tell you more about the natural and cultural heritage of Škocjan Caves and the regional park. Visit the interpretation center free of charge. Opening times: from 1 June to 30 September every day from 11.30 to 19.30, from May to October only on the weekends from 11.00 to 18.00. The center is closed for the rest of the year.
