Škocjan Caves through the Karst Living Museum
The Sežana to Škocjan Loop is a moderately challenging cycling tour that runs in a pleasant and circular trail between the many interesting features of the Karst.
The starting point is the center of Sežana. The first section is traversed on foot through the railway underpass (you can also cycle a bit further along the main road towards Lipica to the first roundabout), then an easy single trail runs along the railway towards Divača. By cycling through the villages of Merče, Plešivica, Povir in Gorenje pri Divači, we reach Divača on mildly sloped unpaved and unfrequented paved roads.
From there, the road runs through Dolnje Ležeče towards Škocjan Caves Regional Park and the village of Gradišče pri Divači. The only challenging, but short descent and ascent into and out of the Sapendol collapse doline leads to the villages of Betanja, Škocjan, and Matavun in the heart of the Škocjan Caves Park. The road ahead is paved or unpaved in places, running towards the village of Lokev and is easy, as is the short section leading to Lipica, where the route runs on the main road for a bit.
The final section between Lipica and Sežana with its dirt roads and footpaths through the Karst Living Museum demonstrates the riches of the natural and cultural heritage the Karst has to offer. The varied section to the village of Orlek is followed by a relaxed conclusion and return journey on the paved road to Sežana.
